Welcome ALilyAmongThorns, our new OyBay’ster

ALilyAmongThorns is my honorary little sister. How did that come about? Very simple. She’s the younger sister of my honorary sister, Kashetet. 🙂 Makes sense, almost too much sense…

That being said, I’ve known her for about 9 years now, I reckon. And this whole time that I’ve known her the one thing that never ceases to amaze me is how she has such a great time being involved Jewishly. Such naches, this girl gives me.

But don’t you, our loyal Oy Bay fans, get to thinking that her elevated status of Oy Bay author is due solely to honorary nepotism. Nay, this girl is not just another pretty Jewish punim, but has a sharp opinionated mind behind it to boot.

ALilyAmongThorns has an experience that mirrors many Jewish Russian Americans in the Bay Area. She was born in Moscow, Russia, lived in Netanya, Israel, then bounced through Massachusetts and New Jersey before staking out a home in California. She was very involved in BBYO in the South Bay, and cut her journalistic teeth at her high school newspaper, gaining awards along the way. She’s worked as an editor and journalist for De Anza’s La Voz student paper, once again unable to shake her award-winning tendencies, and also busied herself as a Senator in the De Anza Associated Student Body (consolidating political and media power, as any good Jewish girl should). And her Jewish credentials post-high school are just as impressive, having been an active member of the De Anza Jews, Israelis & Friends (JIF) club, and having served as a Koret Intern for the Hillel of Silicon Valley.

Her future plans are to dazzle the loyal Oy Bay audience and to show Berkeley Hillel what’s what when she transfers to Cal next spring. Go Bears! 🙂
