Welcome Back to Galut, Oyster

Posted by Oyster on January 17, 2007

Repair shop technician: “[Says Oyster’s Israeli name]? That’s an unusual name…”

Not in my country, buddy. What compelled you to say that?

Co-worker #1: “How was Israel?”

Oyster: “It was great! I got to visit family & friends. I toured all over the country, it has a lot of geographical variation–“

Co-worker #2 interjects: “… and geo-political variation.”

[co-workers laugh]

Why is that funny? Hey, your homeland is in a turbulent warzone! Ha-ha, get it? Why is it necessary for blunt stereotypes to be tossed in to someone’s nuanced description of their travel experience?

I’m an outsider. I’m surrouded again by strangers who look at me funny. Welcome back to Galut, Oyster. 😦

😦 Don’t remind me of my impending doom… Israel always wants you here, Oyster.
