Ristorante Raphael The map of Kosher eats in the Oy-Bay Area is once again changing. This Sunday, July 1 we say goodbye to Ristorante Raphael; which has been serving up delicious Kosher vegetarian eats for the last four years in Berkeley. They were one of the few upscale Kosher establishments and had won their share of awards including Best Italian Restaurant in j.’s Readers’ Choice Awards and Best Rating in Downtown Berkeley in the 2007 ZAGAT survey of San Francisco Bay Area restaurants. Owners Noah and Hope Alper would love for you come bye to say l’hitraot Sunday, when their last meal will be served.

Forgive me for being honest, but I went there once and I didn’t really like it. The menu was too fancy. My two favorite Italian dishes are:

    1) Spaghetti/linguine/some kind of long thin noodles with some sort of a tomato based spaghetti sauce.

    2) Lasagna

They didn’t have either of these on the menu, when I went there. They just had a bunch of complicated dishes that didn’t seem too appealing.

The other thing they may have had working against them is that most folks in the Bay Area, or I should say my impression anyway, is that most will go to a vegetarian place even if it’s not under Rabbinic supervision. So if you’re going to spend the extra money on that, you might as well make it a meat restaurant.

For example, the kosher Chinese place in San Francisco; why go all the way up there when you can go to various vege Chinese places in the South Bay? I think most of us give the gentiles the benefit of the doubt that they’re going to wash the bugs out of the lettuce without a rabbi telling them to.
