Cute video: “Where does all the money go?”

Posted by Oyster on January 14, 2008

I’ve been involved in a project at my local Federation, which resulted in this video:http://www.jvalley.org/video

It’s a really cute cartoon animation trying to explain “where does all the money go?” when donated to the Federation. It’s impressive in its ability to explain as much as it does without any explicit narration.

The inspiration for the video came from a group of young lay-leaders at the Jewish Federation of Silicon Valley, who were frustrated with how to explain and promote the Jewish Federation’s mission in an appealing and positive way. We feel that this video is not only entertaining, but succeeds in demonstrating why giving tzedakah to the Federation goes a long way in supporting the Jewish community.

We’d love it if you could help us spread the word, over the various blogs, social networking media, and email lists that you have access to. The video itself is hosted primarily at YouTube.com, and we have a Facebook profile as well.

  1. very nice cartoon video delivering a very important message. but, please, do be honest with the viewers and your donors!

in addition to the federation supporting everything shown – according to their own financial figures – about 28% of the money goes into overhead, salaries, fundraising, etc.

therefore, it would be important to represent that as well – after all, the video is entitled ‘where does ALL the money go?”

transparency is important, and even mandated by jewish law….

    thanks for listening.

actually this Federation is down under 10% for overhead and charity navigator (I think) upgraded this Federation from one star to three this past year

Wow, Arnie. Thanks for pointing that out! And here I thought that all my friends who work in the Jewish community, were working 60 hour weeks for free.

I’ll take your “points” with a grain of salt, considering that you’re living in Israel (and therefore a beneficiary of UJA), and not in the Silicon Valley Jewish community. Furthermore, your business is based on competing with the Jewish Federation system for donors / clients, so you have an interest in promoting negative associations about giving to the Federation system.

All of the Silicon Valley Federation’s numbers are published on the jvalley.org website. Why don’t you cite some specific figures?

Oh yeah. And while you’re at it, Arnie, please give us your balance sheet to compare and contrast your efficiency with that of the SV Fed.

    k. thx. bai.
