Brazil: Rio de Judeo?
Posted by Oyster on March 24, 2008
This is Oyster here, live-blogging from Hillel’s Alternative Spring Break program in Rio de Janeiro. We are here to work on our tan, dance the samba, practice Capoeira, and make a difference. Our group from Stanford Hillel is partnering with the Rio Hillel, with assistance from a group from Northwestern, to work on two Tzedek projects. The first is to help build a solarium at an affordable private school in a ‘favela’ (aka shanty-town), which would allow more working-poor parents to drop off their younger children in daycare, and their older children at school in the same facility. Also, we will be working to educate kids about the basics of hygiene.
A couple of interesting Jewish tid-bits I noticed while here:
some kid said ‘Tchau, Israelit!’, or something to that effect to me when I got off a bench to get in line for the cable car to Sugar Loaf.
on the cable-car ride down, we went over the tower for some army office complex. On the roof of the tower, there were two large pipe Stars of David, one white, and the other black! I’ll post up pictures later.
We drove through a plaza, which had a chanukiah in it. Someone said that they thing it was a Yitzhak Rabin memorial.
We passed the dying Club Hebraica, their JCC of sorts.
Two of the dolls in the shop window next to our hotel have Stars of David on their hats. Random! Picture to come.
